Mambo No. 5

Perfect for restaurants, clubs, parties, picnics and any gathering of people who want to listen to the evocative sounds of the steel drum, dance to the rhythms of the islands or just have fun.

Makes you feel like you’re on a great vacation!

The Musical Cruise is available is either a full band with steel drum, bass, drums and percussion or as a solo performance using pre-recorded accompaniment.

The Solo Performance

(with accompaniment)

The combination of the poly rhythmic music and computer sound technology makes it possible for a single performer to sound like a full band. Caribbean music is based on a melodic presentation (steel drum – keyboard – vocal) that is supported by a rhythm and bass that creates a unique feel for each song. These bass and rhythm parts are recorded on to a CD. Consequently, the performer plays or sings the melody while the CD recreates the supporting bass and rhythms to give the effect of a full orchestra.

The combined effect of years of experience on keyboards, vocals and steel drums performing all styles of music with the technical ability to provide bass, drums and percussion results in a performance that ranges from mellow jazz to hypnotic reggae to roaring Caribbean dance sounds.

SPECIAL SHOWS FOR SENIORS

A variation on the piano music offered by Robert is the Musical Cruise Steel Drum Band.  When the residents know that we’re going to come in with the steel drum they’re ready for a party!  Often, we find the common area decorated to resemble a cruise ship, complete with palm trees and leis for all the residents [and us!].

Latin music was very popular in the 30s and 40s, and many of the most popular songs of the times were Latin American songs performed by Xavier Cugart, Harry Belafonte, and others.

Robert’s mastery of the steel drum lends a Latin beat to favorites like Besame Mucho, Brazil, and Marianne.  Many of the standard favorite songs like O Sole Mio, Ramona, and Oh, What A Beautiful Morning sound great on the steel drum with a calypso beat.  He can even play Amazing Grace and have people dancing to it!  It is always a party when the steel drum is in attendance.

Booking the steel drum band into the convalescent hospitals and retirement homes is not an "every month" occurrence, but for a change, it certainly brings a new spark to the eyes of our residents!  It is particularly effective during the summer months for an outdoor party

The Musical Cruise Steel Drum Band is available for private parties, specifically for people who want to listen, dance, and have fun!
